Youth Climate Ambassadors Wrap-Up: Youth Leading the Way in Climate Action
Over the summer, Skills for Change proudly wrapped up the Youth Climate Ambassadors (YCA) Program, a six-week paid initiative delivered in partnership with the City of Toronto’s Environment, Climate and Forestry Division and Social Development – Youth Development Unit. From July 21 to August 29, 2025, 20 youth leaders (ages 18–24) came together to learn, collaborate, and launch projects that make a real difference in the fight against climate change.
Youth-Led Climate Projects
Over six weeks, our participants turned bold ideas into action by designing and launching three inspiring community initiatives:
Cli-Mit Quest – A public learning game making climate topics fun and accessible (ClimitQuest.org)
Fashion Forward – A community event featuring a clothing swap and a youth-led runway show
Responsible Cafés TO – A citywide effort supporting cafés in reducing waste and normalizing reusable cups
These projects highlight the creativity, leadership, and impact of Toronto’s youth in building a sustainable future.
Skill Building & Hands-On Experience
Throughout the program, participants gained:
Workshops and training in climate science, sustainability, and community solutions
Site visits with City staff and environmental professionals
Public engagement opportunities at local events, connecting with residents across Toronto
Direct mentorship while designing and launching their own climate action projects
Youth were paid $25 per hour for up to 20 hours per week, ensuring equitable access to this unique opportunity. At the end of the program, each participant received a Youth Climate Ambassador Certificate, expanded sector knowledge, and valuable professional connections.
In Their Own Words
The impact of YCA is best reflected in the voices of the youth themselves:
“I personally learned so much, how to help lead a group, navigate obstacles, and spend time with such an amazing group of individuals.”
“The Youth Climate Action Initiative pushed me to grow in ways I didn’t expect. It has prepared me to work with people in different roles and explain complex ideas in plain language.”
“Through our Fashion Forward project, I learned how youth-led ideas can turn into real action in the community.”
“I am very thankful for this incredible opportunity to meet people and make my own climate project. I would 1000% recommend youth in GTA to do the program in the future!”
Looking Ahead
The YCA Program reflects a shared commitment from Skills for Change and the City of Toronto to invest in youth leadership and inclusive climate solutions. The creativity and dedication shown by this year’s participants are proof that when youth are equipped with the tools, resources, and mentorship they need, they can inspire real change in their communities and beyond.
Together, we are building a more sustainable and equitable future, one youth leader at a time.
