Embracing New Beginnings: Reflections on Citizenship and Diversity from a Canadian Immigrant's Perspective
This week, I had the profound honor of speaking at a citizenship ceremony for 116 new Canadians. This experience was deeply emotional and personal for me, reflecting on my journey as an immigrant who became a proud Canadian citizen. My family's decision to move to Canada during my childhood opened a world of opportunities and led me to become a citizen of a country I deeply admire.
In my blog post, I want to share the significance of becoming Canadian. It's more than a change in nationality; it's a privilege that allows one to live amidst a diverse population, each with unique cultures and stories. Canada is not just a place of residence; it's a mosaic of global perspectives, a land of peace, prosperity, and safety.
Our nation's beauty lies not only in its landscapes and cities but also in its commitment to inclusion, democracy, and respect for all. Being Canadian means having access to robust laws, rights, and freedoms, as well as bearing the responsibility to respect these laws, contribute positively to our communities, and uphold the values that make Canada exemplary.
To the new Canadians, you now add to our country's strength, traditions, and dreams. Embrace this new chapter with enthusiasm and pride, participate in our community, and cherish our shared values. Your unique experiences and perspectives enrich our country.
As CEO of Skills for Change, I see this as a moment to reiterate our commitment to supporting immigrants and refugees in integrating and thriving in Canadian society. Congratulations to the new citizens. Welcome to your new home, Canada, where your journey has just begun. I am excited to see the contributions you will make to our wonderful country.
