About the Trade Spark Program

Trade Spark: Electrical Foundations is a free pre-apprenticeship training program designed to support participants in building foundational skills and gaining real-world exposure to the electrical trade.

The program provides 12 weeks of in-class training in Electrician – Construction and Maintenance as the primary trade, along with 1 week of exposure to Industrial Mechanic Millwright as a secondary trade. Participants receive hands-on technical training, workplace readiness support and integrated remedial math instruction to reinforce key concepts throughout the program.

Participants who successfully complete the training and employment preparation requirements may be eligible for an 8–12 week paid work placement, offering practical, on-the-job experience and connections with skilled trades employers.

Eligibility

To be eligible, participants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Be a resident of Ontario

  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada

  • Have an interest in a career in the electrical or skilled trades

  • Be able to commit to full-time training in person at:

Program Components

  • Orientation & safety training

  • 12 weeks of electrician training (Primary Trade)

  • 1 week of millwright exposure (Secondary Trade)

  • Integrated academic support, mentoring, and job-readiness/employment preparation

  • Safety certifications (Emergency First Aid/CPR, Working at Heights)

  • Support obtaining an 8–12 week paid work placement (eligibility required)

  • To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old, a resident of Ontario, have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN), and be legally entitled to work in Canada.

    The program also aims to support individuals who are underrepresented in the skilled trades, including youth, women, newcomers, racialized individuals, 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, and people facing barriers to employment.

  • Training runs from May 18, 2026 to March 5, 2027 and takes place in person at Humber Polytechnic, Centre for Trades and Technology (110 Carrier Drive, Etobicoke, ON M9W 5R1)

  • There is no cost to enroll — the program is completely free.

  • The program focuses primarily on Electrician – Construction and Maintenance, with a secondary trade focus on Industrial Mechanic (Millwright).

  • Yes, participants will receive industry-recognized certifications such as WHMIS, First Aid & CPR, and Working at Heights, along with Level 1 in-class training.

  • Yes, the program includes an 8 to 12 week paid work placement with an employer in Ontario.

  • Yes, all work placements are paid at least at the equivalent of minimum wage.

  • You’ll receive ongoing support throughout training, during your placement, and for up to one year after completion to help you transition into employment or an apprenticeship.

  • Graduates are supported in pursuing apprenticeship registration or employment in the skilled trades, with the goal of helping most participants move directly into the workforce.
