MEET Christina Kerr, HR Generalist at Skills for Change!
Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Christina Kerr and I’m the HR Generalist at Skills for Change. I’ve been in this role since July 2023. In my spare time I enjoy dancing, Zumba, lifting weights, exploring new restaurants and traveling.
Can you share a bit about your journey to Canada?
I came to Canada when I was 13 years old. My Dad received a job promotion which involved relocating to Canada from Jamaica, so my immediate family moved here. I remember not knowing what to expect but being excited about experiencing living in a different country. During my first year in Canada , I was quite homesick as it was a culture shock and I missed the friendships I left in Jamaica. However, I adapted and today I cherish the multicultural experience of living in Canada.
What was life like in your home country?
I loved living in Jamaica and now enjoy traveling there occasionally for vacation and to visit family. Jamaica has more of a collective and community based culture so people value community and strong social relationships. Jamaica has much better weather, a tropical climate with no extremes as Canada that has frigid winters. Jamaica is mostly sunny, cool in the mountains and not terribly hot. Also the Jamaican landscape and geography is beautiful. The island is mountainous and has gorgeous fauna, trees and white sand beaches. In addition, the food is fresh and delicious.
How did you get involved with Skills for Change?
I’ve been working at Skills for Change as an HR Generalist since July 2023. I knew a few people that worked there so I was familiar with the kind of work that Skills for Change does. I was looking for new opportunities at the time and when I saw the job posting I quickly applied and the rest is history. I thoroughly enjoy making a positive impact in our employees' work lives and in the broader community. Although my role is mostly internal facing, it’s great being able to interact with our clients and volunteers at various events that we host.
Is there a particular moment or memory that stands out for you?
The Pioneers for Change Gala remains etched in my memory. Witnessing immigrants being honored for their achievements in Canada, despite facing challenges, underscores the profound impact of Skills for Change's work.
What are you most proud of in life?
I’m most proud of the strong relationships that I have with my family, friends and colleagues. It’s very enriching to have strong social connections and every day that I’m able to build those relationships it makes me happy and gives me a great sense of fulfillment.
What inspires you?
I find inspiration in a variety of people and things. I would have to say that the person who has most greatly inspired me has been my mother. She epitomizes a strong work ethic and always puts other people before herself. She has a very warm personality and an innate ability to connect with others wherever she goes. She’s my greatest mentor and I can truly talk to her about anything.
What's the best advice you've received in life?
Believe in yourself. You have to accomplish something mentally before being able to accomplish it physically and that starts with believing in yourself and that you can accomplish that goal.
Can you tell us something interesting about yourself that not many people know of?
During university, I was a part of a hip-hop dance club called “Live 4 Dance”. Dance classes were hosted twice weekly. I was also Treasurer of the Roots African and Caribbean Society Club and performed in their dance showcase. I love dancing!
Is there anything you'd like to share with us?
I appreciate the inclusive culture at Skills for Change, where authenticity is encouraged. The diverse staff and clients embody a commitment to bridging opportunities for success in Canada, particularly for newcomers and underserved groups.
