Moments that Matter: Newcomer and Refugee Marketplace Success
On June 24th, 2025, Skills for Change hosted its Newcomer and Refugee Marketplace – an event that turned a simple room filled with donated goods into a space of support, connection, and community solidarity. Organized through community generosity, the marketplace offered clothing and essentials collected from across the city.
Experience the day through the eyes of our Settlement Worker Intern, who witnessed these moments of connection and joy firsthand.
They recalled meeting a woman from Brazil who had just given birth and was hoping to find something for her baby. After selecting clothes for her son, she browsed the women’s section with hesitation – until her eyes lit up at the sight of a beautiful dress. “Wait...this might actually fit!” she said, bursting into joyful laughter. She began to sway with happiness, adding, “I always dance when I’m happy – it’s the Brazilian in me!”
Later in the day, a pregnant woman entered, moving slowly and carefully. She quietly asked if there were any newborn clothes or baby supplies, as her due date was quickly approaching. Before she could finish, one of the team members stepped in with a warm smile: “Let’s find you everything you need, we’ve got plenty here.” Together, they gathered blankets, onesies, and diapers – essentials she wasn’t sure she’d be able to find in time. She left with relief in her step and returned later with a container of homemade food. “Please take this – it’s just a little thank you,” she said, her voice full of emotion.
The Marketplace was a haven of joy for younger newcomers and families as well. One staff member noticed a little girl holding a tiny pink chair, her pom-pom headband bouncing with every step. Her excitement was unmistakable. Just behind her, the girl’s mother clutched a newly found pressure cooker with visible joy – finally able to cook meals she knew and loved for her family. As they left, the young girl smiled shyly and whispered, “thank you,” then giggled and waved as she pulled her new chair behind her, hands full of toys.
One mother, originally from Bangladesh, was deeply moved by the experience. As she and her daughter found what they needed, she expressed heartfelt gratitude and then said something that stayed with the team: “Since I’m receiving today, I want to give back too. I’d love to donate some of my daughter’s dresses that no longer fit.” For her, it wasn’t about charity — it was about reciprocity, solidarity, and being part of something greater.
Reflecting on the day, our intern shared how meaningful it was to witness these quiet moments of care. Coming from a background in teaching, they weren’t sure how their skills would transfer into community work. But the Marketplace served as a powerful reminder: whether in a classroom or a community space, empathy, connection, and human dignity are always at the heart of meaningful impact.
