About the Awards

Each year for the past 17 years, Skills for Change has had the privilege to recognize and showcase the accomplishments of outstanding individuals who have come to call Canada “home”. The stories of hardships and heartbreaks that many immigrants and refugees to Canada have overcome and succeeded against all odds are shared onstage each year at our Annual New Pioneers Awards (NPA). The NPA Award recipients are a testament to the power of the indomitable human spirit that has moved so many newcomers forward even in the face of overwhelming personal and professional adversity.

As the GTA’s landmark cultural community celebration, The NPA is often referred to as the “Oscars of Diversity”. As a community driven event; individuals from the community nominate worthy candidates, community volunteers conduct the selection process, and both corporations and community leaders within the GTA gather at this annual gala event. Together they celebrate the achievements of NPA award recipients across six award categories that include Arts, Community Service, Entrepreneurship, Science and Technology, Youth, and Skills for Change Graduate.

In June 2008, The New Pioneers Awards team was awarded the prestigious Newcomer Champion Awards by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration. This award is a tribute to individuals and groups who have contributed to the understanding and sharing of Ontario’s cultural diversity. We are proud to have received this award as it demonstrates the success and public value our New Pioneers Awards brings to the lives of newcomers. Please click here for more information.

As a further way of giving back to society, in 2008 Skills for Change formed the Pioneers for Change Committee. Through a collaborative effort with past NPA Award recipients, the Pioneers for Change Committee acts as a generator and sounding board for ideas and proposals that help facilitate the integration of newcomers into the Canadian workplace and society.
